Why Your Furnace Has a Strange Smell

Published on November 29, 2016
Furnace Smells 617

Most homeowners in Ocala know to call Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning when their heating equipment starts making weird noises or leaking water, but did you know that strange smells are another reason to call an expert? Read about these heating equipment smells you should never ignore.

Rotten Eggs

The smell of rotten eggs is very recognizable, which is why several gas companies add this distinct odor to their gas to notify homeowners and service techs that there is trouble. If you smell this odor coming from your furnace, power off your gas appliances right away as you might have a gas leak. Open the doors and windows so any gas can release outside, and call your heating equipment service expert as soon as possible and tell them you think you may have a gas leak.

Mold or Musty

Your HVAC system function together to keep you comfortable throughout all the seasons. Since A/C systems can cause condensation to collect, moisture can form in your air duct system and produce mold, producing the musty or moldy odor. If you turn on your furnace or AC system and smell an odor like this, call Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning. We’ll come over ASAP to examine your duct system and perform an indoor air quality analysis. We can then give you recommendations on how to eliminate the source of the smell and make sure your heating and cooling system is ready to keep you comfortable and healthy all winter long.

Electrical or Burning

There are many things that could be going on if you smell an electrical or burning smell, all of which should grab your attention and should not be ignored. If you have this smell coming from your heating equipment, it’s possible something is overheating or may be an indication of wiring problems. Turn off your furnace ASAP and call your furnace technician to provide a full diagnosis.
