Happy Canada Day Published on June 30, 2016 Friday marks Canada Day’s 149th anniversary! In honor of the holiday, we’ve provided a few fun facts about the nation’s holiday. July 1st was originally referred to as Dominion Day because at the time Canada was officially known as the Dominion of Canada.The Dominion of Canada, now Canada, was a collection of four colonies: Nova Scotia, Upper Canada (now Ontario), New Brunswick, and Lower Canada (now Quebec).Unlike America’s break from Great Britain, the Canadian provinces requested independence from Queen Victoria and she agreed.The British North American Act was signed to declare the Dominion of Canada’s independence.
